Chloride Outreach Plan

In September Town staff in cooperation with Stillwater Environmental developed a Chloride Outreach Plan as part of a statewide initiative to reduce the impact of chloride pollution on local and regional waters. In addition to meeting compliance requirements of the education and outreach component of the State MS4 Stormwater Permit the plan builds on the new Statewide voluntary Best Management Practices Manual for Snow and Ice Control.

The Chloride Outreach Plan stipulates a Snow and Ice control Level of Service Plan (LOS) will be developed by June 2016. Working with Stillwater Environmental we began working on the LOS plan in December and as a result realized improved conditions on our priority routes could be realized by modifying the current plow route responsibilities. The biggest issue we identified was Route 196 and Main Street were being maintained by the same driver. Considering Route 196 and Route 125 are both priority routes we split the route so one driver would be responsible for Rt. 196 and one driver would be responsible for Rt. 125. This change resulted in changes to most of the rest of the plow routes in order to share the responsibilities between all the drivers appropriately.

The next winter event we will start using the new route map. There will be an adjustment period associated with these changes and we ask for patience as we continue to review and improve our approach to snow and ice control activities.
